The Barrinha de Esmoriz Walkways, located between the municipality of Ovar and the border area of Espinho, are one of the most pleasant walking routes on the northern coast of Portugal for those seeking nature, tranquility, and unique coastal landscapes. Set within the area of Barrinha de Esmoriz, also known as Lagoa de Paramos, these walkways offer an immersive experience in an ecosystem of high environmental value, where water, vegetation, and wildlife coexist in harmony.

With several kilometers of route on well-maintained wooden structures, the trail invites relaxing walks, morning runs, or bicycle rides, always with open views over the lagoon, the dunes, and the typical vegetation of coastal wetlands. Along the way, it is common to observe different bird species, making this place especially appealing to birdwatching enthusiasts and nature photographers.

Barrinha de Esmoriz also represents a remarkable example of environmental recovery. For years affected by ecological degradation, the area underwent requalification interventions that brought life back to this important natural habitat. Today, the brackish lagoon — which occasionally connects with the sea — shelters significant biodiversity and serves as a privileged space for environmental education and outdoor leisure.

The route stands out for its accessibility and versatility: both families with children and visitors looking for a more contemplative walk will find an ideal setting here. Its proximity to the beach also makes it possible to combine the walk with time by the sea, creating a perfect plan for a relaxing day.

Esmoriz: the town that hosts this experience

The walkways are located next to Esmoriz, a coastal town belonging to the municipality of Ovar, in the district of Aveiro. Known for its long beaches, peaceful atmosphere, and strong connection to nature, Esmoriz has been establishing itself as a preferred destination for getaways on the Portuguese coast. In addition to the Barrinha, it stands out for its sea-related gastronomy, surrounding natural spaces, and proximity to cities such as Porto, Espinho, and Aveiro, making it an excellent base for exploring the region.

It was a nice sunny day, end of April, a little windy. The path is very well preserved but pay attention to some gaps on the floor. The nature is nice, but not to much diversity. It took us about an hour and a half, with some stops to complete the circle.

Well designed and providing different directions. The avifauna spot is a disappointment, somehow. The landscape is a bit monotonous.

A lot of thought went into this, and it's very well built, with lots of relevant information on the wildlife and bird-watching huts. Absolutely great. It's an especially marvellous feat considering it's located next to one of the most dismal towns I've ever had the misfortune to visit.

Amazing place to chill.. But you need to be careful with the broken woods.. Maybe bicycles shouldn't be allowed here :/
