Nestled within the rugged heart of Norway lies Sauna Fjord, a truly remarkable natural phenomenon. Often described as a “blue blade” cutting through the mountains, this fjord stretches an astonishing 200 kilometers inland and plunges to depths exceeding 1,300 meters – making it the longest and deepest in Norway. Its dramatic formation, sculpted over millennia by the relentless advance and retreat of glaciers, is a testament to the power of nature.
The visual impact is immediately striking. Towering cliffs, reaching heights of over 1,700 meters, rise dramatically on either side of the shimmering, emerald-to-deep blue waters. These stone giants are frequently crowned with snow-capped peaks and punctuated by cascading waterfalls. The fjord itself acts as a perfect mirror, reflecting the expansive sky and surrounding greenery, creating a feeling of boundless space. Despite its raw, powerful beauty, the area also boasts pockets of tranquility, with charming villages like Balastrand and Flom offering a glimpse of rural Norwegian life, often with blossoming orchards in springtime.
Visitors can experience this unique environment through shared sauna sessions, offering a truly invigorating contrast between the warmth of the heat and the refreshing chill of the fjord. Facilities are provided, including changing rooms and secure storage for belongings. Recent reviews consistently highlight the stunning views and the overall positive experience, though it’s worth noting that the saunas can accommodate up to twelve people, so booking in advance is recommended. Getting to Sauna Fjord is easily done via local transport – a autocarro (bus) is a convenient option from nearby towns.

Simply incredible! Tried many saunas with cold plunges in Norway. This one is among the very best. Great service, equipment, attitude.
Great location and lovely sauna and dippin in the fjord. Such beautiful views
Beautiful view and amazing experience! The saunas are shared. We had six people in ours and that was okay but they say it can have up to 12 (which could be uncomfortable). They charge extra to use a towel ($11 AUD per towel)... Which should really be included in the price. Still highly recommend because of the location.
Exhilarating! We hired a towel, there’s a small changing room inside and a place for belongings in the vestibule prior to the sauna. The session flew by and I’m a complete convert - thank you!
Very nice and clean sauna with an amazing view of the fjord. And even in the winter diving in the cold water after the sauna is not so difficult and gives you a pleasant sense of wellness afterwards. The person at the reception was also very welcoming.
Excellente expérience de sauna avec une vue magnifique sur le fjord. Nous avons particulièrement apprécié la trappe qui permet de rentrer dans l’eau froide de la mer directement depuis l’intérieur du sauna.
A fantastic sauna experience on the fjord! Flam was pretty quiet at night time and there was not much else to do so it was very lovely to enjoy the floating sauna on the fjord! There are upper level on the top of the sauna where you can enjoy jumping off into the fjord 🏞️💦 Cold water in the fjord after hot sauna was super refreshing! The hot stone for the sauna is really good and created perfect heat when the water shower on it 🚿 😂 We had 8 people in total, including the two of us, in our session times.
