Nestled in the heart of Porto, Confeitaria do Bolhão is a true gem, a bakery and café with a history stretching back to 1896. It’s more than just a place to grab a sweet treat; it’s a living piece of Porto’s heritage. For decades, this establishment has been a favourite amongst Porto’s elite, a place where locals would begin their day, and today, it continues to draw crowds from across the city.

Stepping inside is like travelling back in time. The interior retains much of its original charm, with captivating old mirrors and vintage décor creating a wonderfully authentic atmosphere. Of course, you’ve come for the pasteis de nata – and they are exceptional. These custard tarts, a true Portuguese icon, are a local favourite and a must-try for any visitor. But Confeitaria do Bolhão offers so much more: fresh bread, an array of traditional pastries like bolos and croissants, and delicious regueifas.

Be aware that it can get incredibly busy, particularly during the mornings, so arriving early is highly recommended to secure a table. However, the experience – the history, the atmosphere, and of course, the incredible pasteis de nata – is undoubtedly worth it. Confeitaria do Bolhão offers a genuine taste of Porto, a chance to connect with the city’s culinary traditions and create a lasting memory.
