Just a stone’s throw from the Praça do Marquês, Brites e Manteigaria – in that order – is a truly renowned artisanal bakery and pastry shop. The abundance of their display cases is immediately captivating, showcasing a delightful array of golden pastries, classic croissants, traditional sweets, and inventive creations from their own kitchen. And now, with a charming little space right by the door, the irresistible aroma of freshly brewed coffee competes wonderfully with the scent of flaky pastry – a truly sensory experience.

We opted for a hearty “pequeno-almoço reforçado” – the perfect excuse to delve into their extensive menu. We started with a creamy and comforting “Meia de Leite,” topped with a delicate foam that resembled a springtime cloud. For a truly unique treat, we indulged in the “Saturno,” a house specialty inspired by the classic Portuguese dessert. It’s a layered delight of flaky pastry embracing a rich, decadent cream filling, complemented by the familiar crunch of Maria biscuits – a perfect balance of texture and sweetness.

And of course, you simply must try the “Croissant de pastrami com cream cheese.” Here, they don’t do things by halves; the croissant is a full-flavored experience – delightfully crisp on the outside, wonderfully soft within, and punctuated by the savoury pastrami and creamy cream cheese. It's the kind of combination that makes your heart sing… and leaves a trail of delicious crumbs behind.
