Discover the Corgo Walkways

If you associate Vila Real only with the imposing Mateus Palace or the adrenaline of its International Rally Circuit, it is because you have not yet walked the Corgo Walkways, a surprising pedestrian trail that unfolds along the steep and lush valley of the Corgo River, one of the Douro's tributaries.

Opened in 2021, they have quickly become a must-visit for hiking enthusiasts passing through Trás-os-Montes, and the reputation is well deserved.

Dive Into the Corgo Canyon

Although they sit just a stone's throw from Vila Real's historic centre, the Corgo Walkways let you immerse yourself in nature and explore stretches of the stunning Corgo canyon that were once inaccessible. Along the way you will cross photogenic wooden bridges, pass waterfalls and pools, spot countless birds and even have the chance to visit the historic Biel Hydroelectric Plant, the oldest in Portugal (1894).

The Route

The trail is roughly 2.5 km long (5 km round trip), connecting Bairro dos Ferreiros, home to the emblematic Corgo Iron Bridge, to the lofty Vila Velha, the medieval birthplace of Vila Real. Do not expect continuous wooden walkways from end to end: the boardwalks were only built in strategic sections to ease access and protect the surroundings, totalling around 750 metres. A decision we appreciate, as it preserves the authenticity and wild character of this stretch of the valley.

Difficulty and Family

Despite some challenging climbs and descents, it is a walk perfectly accessible with children, provided they are reasonably used to this kind of outing.

Extending the Walk

If 5 km feels short, you will be pleased to know that the Corgo Walkways connect with the green Corgo Park, letting you extend the riverside stroll by another 5 km. You can also combine the walkways with sections of the Corgo Ecotrail and centuries-old rural paths to create a rewarding circular route of roughly 6 km.
