The Colombia River Gorge offers a truly remarkable experience, a place where the raw power of nature is on full display. Stretching for over 80 metros, this dramatic landscape boasts towering basalt cliffs that rise nearly 4,000 feet, creating a breathtaking corridor where water, rock, and dense forest intertwine. Frequent strong winds, reaching around 35 km/h, whip up a constant spray, transforming the valley into a mesmerizing spectacle of drifting white clouds – a feeling akin to stepping into an ancient, untouched world.
Standing beneath the impressive waterfalls, you’ll be enveloped by the echoing roar of the water and the invigorating cold spray, providing a humbling perspective on your own scale. It’s a location that inspires contemplation and a deep connection with the natural environment. The Gorge is easily accessible, with numerous viewpoints offering stunning panoramas, and a network of trails for those who wish to explore on foot. While popular, especially during peak season, the sheer scale of the area provides ample space to find a moment of tranquility.
Visitors frequently praise the dramatic scenery, particularly during a drive along the scenic route. Many enjoy dedicating a day to fully appreciate the beauty and variety of the area. You can access the Gorge via car, or by utilising local transport – the autocarro is a convenient option. Beautiful drive, great views along the way and can be done in 1 day
As seen from Amtrak Empire Builder Train to Seattle and Portland, Oregon
Beautiful
Stunning water falls. We spent hours there to enjoy the water falls
One of the most scenic views in Portland by car. The hikes in the Gorge can be really good, but the high foot traffic coupled with the facts that the Colombia River Gorge is the best view here, lead me to place it at 4 stars. There are other hikes that are much better in the local area. Go visit the Hood National Forest or Gifford Pinchot National Forest.
It's a very scenic drive.
