De macaw clay lick in Peru is echt een bijzondere ervaring voor natuurliefhebbers. Je hebt hier bijna gegarandeerd de kans om de prachtige, felgekleurde papegaaien van dichtbij te zien (nou ja, op gepaste afstand). Het feit dat je wat verder weg moet blijven, is eigenlijk alleen maar positief: zo wordt het leefgebied van de dieren gerespecteerd en blijven ze zich veilig voelen. Wij boekten onze tour via de officiële website die aan deze plek verbonden is, en dat bleek een uitstekende keuze. De gidsen waren erg deskundig en enthousiast. Ze vertelden niet alleen over de macaws zelf, maar ook over het belang van de kleilik en de ecologie eromheen. Met de meegebrachte verrekijkers en telescopen konden we de vogels goed bekijken, zelfs de details van hun veren waren duidelijk zichtbaar. Het is fascinerend om te zien hoe ze met z’n allen op de kleiwand landen en kleine stukjes klei eten, wat essentieel is voor hun spijsvertering. De hele setting – midden in de jungle, met het geluid van honderden vogels om je heen – maakt het extra bijzonder. Het vroege opstaan is het absoluut waard. Een must-do als je in de Amazone van Peru bent!
