Church of the Hospital or Church of Saint Mark (Braga)

Address
R. de São Bentinho 21, 4700-327 Braga

Located in the center of the city of Braga is the architectural complex of the Hospital and the Church of Saint Mark, built in the 18th century according to a project of Carlos Amarante, who gives his name to the square where it is located. The complex was built on an old 15th century convent that served as shelter for the most deprived.

The Church of Saint Mark has a symmetrical Baroque style facade, marked by two bell towers, giving a greater volume to the building. On the balustrade there are twelve life-size statues of the Apostles, and in the center of them, according to a legend, is the statue of Saint Mark with the miter and the crosier. The finish of the facade includes a coat of arms of Portugal, with the large stone cross of the time and with a magnificent view of the city.

Inside the Church, with a single nave, the vaulted ceilings and frescoes stand out, allowing abundant light entry, transforming the space not only into a welcoming place but also into a place to enjoy the architectural beauty. In the main chapel there is the relic of Saint Mark, brought to Braga centuries ago by a Templar Knight.

This church is located at R. de São Bentinho 21, 4700-327 Braga, and it's easy to access by car. A passionate historical place, full of meaning, to certainly visit and enjoy the best of the city of Braga.
