Church of St. Roque (São Roque do Pico)
The Matriz de São Roque Church, located in the parish of São Roque do Pico, in the same municipality, is a stone pillar on the coast, erected on the sea on the island of Pico.
The Portuguese Catholic Temple was built in 1714, originating its creation in the town of São Roque do Pico, whose birth was in 1542. The church also has an imposing main chapel, gilded with woodwork, provided by King Dom João V, to which he added a silver lamp.
The church bells were another gift, this time from an administrator of the bond. This exquisite church can be explored inside from 1871, when Father Marcelino de Oliveira Serpa blessed us with repairs to the altars, flanked by an Ivory Ambón equal to that found in the Sé Cathedral of Angra do Heroísmo.
Walking along the coast of São Roque do Pico towards the east, this beautiful church appears, sometimes open for visitation. Take a look: you won't regret it.
