Church of São Romão de Arões, Fafe

Set in Arões (São Romão), in the municipality of Fafe, the Igreja de São Romão de Arões is one of the most important historic landmarks in the area. Classified as a National Monument since 1927, it holds a special distinction as the only monument with this status in the municipality, and is often regarded as a highlight of Fafe’s heritage.

The church dates back to the 13th century, with its consecration traditionally recorded as 22 March 1237 on an inscription in the south lateral tympanum. Although its character remains strongly Romanesque, centuries of change have added Gothic and Baroque elements, creating a layered building that reflects different periods of Portuguese religious architecture.

Visitors can admire the round-arched main portal, decorated with an Agnus Dei, as well as the triumphal arch inside, with Romanesque archivolts and carved capitals. The painted coffered ceiling, with floral and religious motifs, adds a later Baroque note to the nave.

Located on Rua do Assento, the church is a rewarding stop for those exploring the cultural landscape of Fafe and the Braga district. Access to the interior may be limited, so it is advisable to check locally in advance if you hope to visit inside.
