Church of Santa Maria de Belém (Lisboa), Portugal
Inside and out, the Church of Santa Maria de Belém impresses. Located in the heart of Lisbon, it offers privileged views of the city, and also of the Jerónimos Monastery, where it is located. It is accessible by car through Praça do Império, 1400-206 Lisbon, and has a free entrance.
A masterpiece of Manueline architecture - a style that marks the golden age of Portugal resulting from the great navigations promoted by D. Manuel I - is characterized by its numerous details. The ceiling has a nautical motif, and the windows and porticoes are filled with nautical, Christian and mythical symbols, creating a harmonious mix of rarefied openings.
The interior of the church houses the petrified tomb of Luís de Camões, the national poet, and Vasco da Gama, and also the mortal relics of D. Sebastião, whose death in battle during the crusade contributed to the signing of the Iberian Union that united Portugal and Spain. A sumptuous dome, without any visible support, evokes the ingenuity of the builders who began their work here even before Brazil was discovered.
In addition to the artistically sculpted sculptures, paintings and stained glass, there is another reason to visit this church: its dome, which, like a starry sky, dominates any visitor. A memorable experience awaits you.
