Church of São José / Santa Luzia (Praia da Vitória)
Church of São José / Santa Luzia
The Church of São José, also known as Santa Luzia, is one of the architectural treasures of Terceira Island, in the Azores. Located just 800 meters from the Lajes International Airport, this 17th-century church is a historical landmark in the city of Praia da Vitória. Originally known as the Hermitage of Santa Mónica and later as São Tomás de Vila Nova, the church was an important religious center for the hermits of the Order of Saint Augustine.
Architecture and History
Built between 1650 and 1690, the Church of São José stands out for its imposing facade, enriched with ashlar stone. The arms of the Order of Saint Augustine and a wooden medallion in relief are just some of the artistic elements that adorn this religious building. In addition, the church has two side chapels, a pulpit, a vestibule, and a high choir, all witnesses to its rich history and religious importance. The image of São José, to whom the church is dedicated, occupies a prominent place inside.
Surroundings and Accessibility
Located in the parish and town of Lajes, the church benefits from its proximity to the Lajes International Airport, an airport infrastructure of great importance not only for Terceira but for the entire Azores archipelago. The airport's runway, the longest in the Azores, and the recent refurbishment of the Lajes Civil Aerogare, make the region easily accessible to tourists and visitors.
