Church of São Brás (Praia da Vitória)
The Church of São Brás: A Historical Gem in Praia da Vitória
The Parish Church of São Brás, located in the Azorean parish of São Brás, municipality of Praia da Vitória, on Terceira Island, Azores, is a magnificent example of Portuguese religious architecture. With a history dating back to the 15th century, this church is distinguished by its low structure, flaunting a façade with a central door and three windows, two flanking the door and one on the upper floor, above which there is a clock. The bell tower, with a window on the ground floor and the upper floor designated for the bells, adds a unique charm to the construction.
Interior and Sacred Art
The interior of the Church of São Brás is equally impressive. With a single nave and transept, it draws attention with its stained glass windows covering all the windows, depicting biblical passages of extreme beauty. This feature is unique in the municipality and rare on the island. The main altar, with gold-leaf woodwork done by the local Levinho brothers, is a special highlight, as well as the image of Our Lady of the Pillar, dated 1888, and the baptismal font in stonemasonry from 1912. The church also houses the precious 17th-century image of São Brás and an 18th-century valuable pendulum clock, both in the sacristy.
Visiting the Church and Surroundings
Beyond the Church of São Brás, visitors can explore the Empire of the Holy Spirit of the parish, located next to the church. This region, rich in history and traditions, offers a unique experience of immersion in Azorean culture. Praia da Vitória, known for its beautiful bay and picturesque historical center, is an invitation to discovery. Notable are the Fort of Santa Catarina, the Church of the Holy Christ, and the Vitorino Nemésio House Museum. The city also boasts its new seaport and the Lajes aerodrome, witnesses of local development and history. For nature lovers, Serra do Cume offers stunning landscapes, and the Miradouro do Facho is an excellent point to appreciate the view over the city. Thus, a visit to Praia da Vitória is not limited to the Church of São Brás but extends to a wide range of cultural, historical, and natural attractions, making it a must-visit destination in the Azores archipelago.
