In Porto
The Church of São Bento da Vitória, located in the heart of the city of Porto, stands as one of the most iconic tourist attractions in the region. From the outside, the view of the city gives the visitor one of the best places to admire the urban landscape. Inside, the set of organs stands out, one of them mute, built only to maintain balance, and the other considered emblematic of the organaria in Portugal. It was designed by the Benedictine brother Frei Manuel de São Bento between 1719 and 1722. Note also the gilded carvings, namely the rococo-style national baroque retable-mor, attributed to master carver Gabriel Rodrigues who executed it in 1716-19, and the retables of the transverse tops of the Portuguese school, dedicated to the Most Holy Sacrament and Our Lady of Exile. These were carried out in 1755 by the carvers José da Fonseca Lima and José Martins Tinoco. Also to be noted are the seventeenth-century black wood pulpits and the eighteenth-century high choir casket attributed to the Bracarense artist Marceliano de Araújo - considered one of the most representative in the country - with narrative panels in the cradles alluding to the life of São Bento. Knowing this beautiful church is a walk that is worth taking. Come and discover all its charm and history!
