The Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Mãe de Deus is located in Povoação, in the municipality of Vila da Povoação, in the island of São Miguel, Azores. The construction of this church began on July 24, 1848, as a joint effort of the Parish Council and parish priest Julião Francisco Tavares. Fractions of the local population contributed funds for the acquisition of the land, which was located in the central area of Povoação. In 1856 the church was ready to be opened to the public, however the construction of the interior dependencies was still in progress. The tower was built later, in the twentieth century. The blessing act was made by the priro Francês, in the name of bishop D. Fr. Estêvão de Jesus Maria. Unfortunately, due to several earthquakes that occurred in the area, the Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Mãe de Deus has been having its structures ruined over time. Thus, in February 1946 the State decided to grant a subsidy to the church to finance its repair. The following year, the State and the General Board contributed to the execution of the work and the church was restored and updated with new altarpieces and images, paintings of the ceilings and beautiful tile panels, with Domingos Rebelo as author. This architectural beauty gives us a breathtaking view of the sea, and it is easily accessible by car. The Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Mãe de Deus invites us to a special visit, as it is a living memory and witness to the unique history of this Azorean region.
