Chapel of Pestanas (Porto)
The Capela dos Pestanas, located on Rua do Almada in the municipality of Porto, is a unique Neo-Gothic style building. Dating back to the end of the 19th century, it was built as a religious temple of the family that inhabited the Palacete dos Pestanas, then located in the gardens of the same.
In front of the Chapel, two statues representing Saint Joseph of Nazareth and his grandfather, Saint Joachim, were sculpted by António Soares dos Reis, a renowned Portuguese sculptor of the 19th century.
Inside the Chapel, liturgical furniture and various stained glass windows were used in the decoration, in particular the single Mor altar, from the Wilmotte house from Lieja, which in 1885 received a gold medal at the Universal Exhibition of Arturpia.
Classified as a property of public interest since 1996, the Capela dos Pestanas presents itself as a unique example of Neo-Gothic art in Portugal. Its location, in the center of the city, with a view of it, and the possibility of access by car, make it an excellent stop for visitors, in search of the culture and history of this city.
