Chapel of Our Lady of the Fields
The Chapel of Our Lady of the Fields, located on Nossa Sra. dos Chãos Street, in Valongo, Portugal, is an eloquent testimony to the country's faith and maritime history. Built in 1625, this chapel was originally a hermitage situated on top of the Valongo mountain, a place that offers a magnificent view over the city of Porto and the Atlantic.
A History Linked to the Sea
The history of this chapel is intimately connected to the adventures and challenges of Portuguese navigators. The image of the Virgin Mary was invoked for protection against storms at sea. In gratitude for a miracle attributed to the Virgin Mary, who saved navigators from a shipwreck, Tomé António, a seafarer, ordered the construction of the chapel.
Architecture and Festivities
With its whitewashed granite structure, the Chapel of Our Lady of the Fields stands out for its simplicity and elegance. The main façade is adorned with a central door with a glazed window and flanked by two windows. The interior, with a single nave, is covered by a gable roof with a cross and pinnacles. The festivities in honor of Our Lady of the Fields take place on the first weekend of September, including a traditional procession between the main church and the hermitage.
A Natural Viewpoint
The location of the chapel offers a 360-degree panoramic view, encompassing the cities of Porto, Gaia, Maia, Matosinhos, Valongo, and Paredes. This is considered one of the best places to appreciate the city of Porto and its coastline, making it a perfect spot to relax and watch the sunset.
