In Porto
The Chapel of King Carlos Alberto is a wonderful treasure in the center of Porto, providing a unique view of the city. The cenotaph was built in the 1850s by order of Princess Augusta de Montleart, as a tribute to her half-brother, King Carlos Alberto of Piedmont-Sardinia. It is surrounded by the Gardens of the Crystal Palace, which since then has become the Rosa Mota Pavilion. King Carlos Alberto, defeated in battle, was forced to seek exile in Portugal, first staying at the "Hospedaria do Peixe" and later at the "Quinta da Macieirinha". It was this last dwelling that he occupied until his death on 28 July 1849. Currently, in the Chapel where the King was honored, the Lutheran Church of Portugal operates. It is open to the public every Sunday and holds masses in English. Do not miss out on discovering this historical relic that can easily be accessible by car. Come and explore and admire the Gardens of the Chapel of King Carlos Alberto - also known as the romantic cenotaph - and enjoy fully the magic of this place.
