Canyon de Chelly National Monument offers a truly unique and humbling experience, a vast sandstone gorge sculpted over millions of years by ancient rivers. Rising dramatically from the Arizona landscape, this incredible canyon boasts walls that reach heights of over 900 feet, formed from sandstone dating back 200 to 250 million years – some of the oldest exposed rock formations in North America. It’s a place where the sheer scale of geological time is palpable, a testament to the power of nature’s artistry.

But Canyon de Chelly is more than just impressive rock formations; it’s a living chronicle of human history. Archaeological evidence reveals that people have inhabited and interacted with this canyon for over 5,000 years, leaving behind remarkable petroglyphs and carvings etched directly onto the sandstone walls. These ancient markings offer glimpses into the lives of the Native American tribes who once thrived here, farming and hunting amidst this dramatic landscape. Exploring the canyon rims provides stunning views, though access to the canyon floor itself is typically by guided tour, offering a deeper connection to its heritage.

Recent reviews highlight a sense of remoteness and tranquility – many visitors appreciate the relative lack of crowds, allowing for a more intimate experience. While some facilities, like restrooms, may occasionally be unavailable, the beauty and historical significance of the monument far outweigh any minor inconvenience. If you’re seeking a destination that combines breathtaking natural beauty with a profound connection to the past, Canyon de Chelly is undoubtedly worth a visit.

Hidden gem! Hardly anyone there, feels very remote. The only thing bad is the bathrooms were closed for the season….

Canyon de Chelly is a naturally beautiful area in Arizona. It is full of history of the Native Americans that lived, farmed, and hunted for centuries. The ruins and petroglyphs tell stories we don't want to forget. Some of the stories are not pleasant but they can't be changed. The canyon is a beautiful place. If you go to Canyon de Chelly, you must do the tour of the canyon offered at Thunderbird Lodge. I highly recommend. Also go to the visitor center to get great information and maps if the canyon.

Cool park! Great canyons views but the lookouts are very spread out; it’s too bad you can only really see into the canyon while at a view point. Lots of driving I did the north side in the morning (as recommended) and I found the south side in the afternoon to be significantly more impressive 5 stars for the Visitor Center staff. Incredibly helpful with tons of information!

Einfach traumhaft schön. Für die Navajo's ein heiliger Ort.

It’s a beautiful and very interesting canyon. The rim drive and overlooks are cool - bring binoculars to really see the ruins from above. For a much more in-depth perspective you can take a Navajo-guided tour into the canyon (you can’t go in yourself except for a single walking trail). I thought this was well worth it to see the petroglyphs and numerous ruins up close, along with learning more about the history and people who still call the canyon home.

It's okay, lacks the drama and stunning formations at Antelope and Grand Canyons. This is perfect for hikers, less so for those who are looking for wow and great photos.

Beautiful place, many scenic lookouts along both rims.
