Palácio da Brejoeira: A Wine Tourism Treasure in Monção
Located in Monção, the Palácio da Brejoeira is a magnificent neoclassical-style construction from the early 19th century. Famous for its Alvarinho wine and well-maintained gardens, this palace is described as the Ex-Libris of the region. Surrounded by high walls typical of the era, it includes a lush park with centuries-old tree species and 18 hectares of Alvarinho vineyards.
A Historical and Architectural Journey
The Palácio da Brejoeira was built in the early years of the 19th century, with construction extending until 1834. Its architecture is attributed to Carlos Amarante, or possibly to José da Costa e Silva, given the similarities with the Palácio da Ajuda in Lisbon. Initially owned by Luís Pereira Velho de Moscoso, the palace changed hands several times over the years, including to Pedro Maria da Fonseca Araújo, who carried out extensive restoration works.
Exploring the Interior and Gardens
Inside, the palace preserves neoclassical rooms, with highlights including the sumptuous halls, frescoes, and valuable paintings, such as a portrait of King John VI. The grand noble staircase, rising from a spacious atrium and decorated with 20th-century tile panels, is one of the highlights of the visit. Outside, the landscaped gardens and vineyards offer a unique wine tourism experience, with high-quality Albariño wines.
Visits and Experiences
For just €7.50, visitors can enjoy a guided tour, immersing themselves in the history and details of the palace and its former inhabitants. In 2010, the palace opened to the public for guided tours, allowing everyone to explore this historical treasure. In 2021, it was for sale for 25 million euros.
Discovering the Municipality of Monção
Beyond the Palácio da Brejoeira, the Municipality of Monção offers several other attractions. Visitors can explore the historic center of Monção, with its narrow streets and traditional architecture, visit the Monção Museum to learn about local history, or enjoy the natural charms of the Minho River, ideal for relaxing strolls and outdoor activities. The local gastronomy also deserves mention, with typical dishes such as Bacalhau à Minho and Monção Smoked Meats, accompanied, of course, by the excellent wines of the region. Traditional festivals and fairs, like the Alvarinho Fair, are not-to-be-missed opportunities to experience the culture and traditions of the locals.
