Bifanas - O Trevo
Located at Praça Luís de Camões 48 in the heart of Lisbon, Bifanas - O Trevo is a beloved gem among locals and visitors alike, celebrated for its authentic Portuguese fare. Specializing in the iconic bifana, a succulent pork sandwich served in crusty bread with a delightful sauce, this establishment promises a taste of Lisbon’s culinary heritage. Its reputation was further solidified by the late Anthony Bourdain, who called it “the glory of Lisbon.”
The atmosphere is casual and welcoming, featuring a small number of communal tables and a cozy counter where you can enjoy your meal standing. While the space may be limited, the experience is rich, with a friendly staff ready to serve you delicious food at very affordable prices. Be sure to arrive with cash, as this charming spot operates on a cash-only basis.
In addition to the bifana, the menu offers other delectable options such as the grilled prego, the hearty bitoque, omelettes, and daily specials that change regularly. Many visitors rave about the cod fritters and shrimp croquettes, making this a must-visit for anyone looking to indulge in the flavours of Portugal. Whether you’re an early bird or just passing through, Bifanas - O Trevo is the perfect stop for a quick and satisfying meal.

Fun place for fast, very affordable food! My husband and I split a Bifana, a Prego, and an order of fries. It's not gourmet, but we enjoyed every bite. And we had just enough room after for dessert! The place itself is tiny and there are a few tables packed inside, community style, and two outside. You can also eat standing at the counter. The woman who helps us was really nice and welcoming. Cash only.
Note: Cash only. Bifana (pork sandwich) was absolutely delicious - the pork was tender, meaty and juicy. There were some condiments on the table such as the chili oil and mustard - I enjoyed adding a bit to sprucing it up. Beer was nice and cold, paired well with the sandwich. Atmosphere was slightly intimidating (coming from a tourist, so take that with a grain of salt) but the staff was straightforward. Make your order and you’ll get what you get very quickly!
Authentic Portuguese food establishment. Also opens early for early birds. Bifana - must try! Cod fritter was one of the best we had this trip! Batter was nicely flavoured and had a great texture. One can taste the cod in the filling. Filling was also moist. The shrimp croquette was also very good! Must visit!
The bifana was tasty and cheap (€3). It’s an authentic bifana in a local spot (mix of locals and tourist), so don’t expect overly friendly staff since things need to move quickly. You can choose to add cheese to the Bifana. If you want to try this local snack than I highly recommend this place.
I really don't know how this place has a 4.5 rating on Google from thousands of reviews Friends had a crossaint each - the fresh ones at lidl are nicer Pastal de nata? Just poor compared to Marie blanche 2 doors down. Service? Lady behind the til had a scowl on her face Only place in Lisbon I've been to that doesn't accept cards Only given 2 stars because my friends bill was cheap.
