Bifanas - Conga (Porto), Portugal Gastronomy Attraction
For a true taste of Porto, a visit to Conga is essential, especially for those who appreciate authentic Portuguese cuisine. Opened in 1976 by Manuel José Oliveira, this beloved eatery has become famous for its delicious bifanas, a traditional sandwich made with tender, slow-cooked pork marinated in a rich, spicy wine sauce. The succulent meat is carefully sliced and nestled in a fresh white roll, creating a delightful combination that's both satisfying and packed with flavor.
Conga is the perfect spot for gathering with friends or family, although be prepared for the possibility of long queues—proof of its popularity among locals and tourists alike. Don't let a wait deter you; the efficient service ensures that you'll be seated quickly, allowing you to indulge in their renowned bifanas and other specialties like cachorros and codornizes. For those on the go, take advantage of the takeaway option to enjoy this culinary delight wherever you are.
Whether you're a long-time fan of Portuguese gastronomy or trying bifanas for the first time, Conga promises a memorable experience. The combination of tender, juicy meat and the inviting atmosphere makes it one of the best places to savour this iconic dish in the vibrant city of Porto.

A must try when you’re in Porto! Best Bifana we’ve ever had! Love the spicy wine sauce it’s cooked in and they load it up with tender meat unlike most Bifana places. Wish we discovered them sooner! Worth the wait if there’s a long line outside (not always). You won’t be disappointed! And it’s located in the coolest city in Portugal, 𝗣𝗢𝗥𝗧𝗢!
We stumbled upon a queue before the restaurant even opened. With 10,000+ reviews still holding strong ratings, we figured it was worth the wait. Ordered the Francesinha à Conga, our first in Porto. This was miles better than the one I had 8 years ago, though I admit that’s a hazy comparison. The dish itself: a beast of a sandwich stacked with steak, ham, bacon, and melted cheese, crowned with a sunny-side-up egg. The sauce is thick, beer-forward, and tangy and tied everything together without drowning the meat. Here’s the problem: we sat next to the toilet. The smell was aggressive enough to dull my appetite halfway through. Hard to fully enjoy layers of rich meat when you’re breathing in bathroom air freshener. If you go, request a table far from the restroom. The food genuinely deserves better surroundings. For traditional Portuguese comfort food, this place delivers just don’t let them seat you where we sat. We went there twice! Because the first time was so good and we would like to try Bifano Empano second time! It becomes the top one we like in Portugal! The sauce is spicy and salty and the pork is in sliced not thick so easy to absorb the sauce and bite!!
Delicious bifanas, the meat is tender, juicy and spicy in just the right amount. The service was fast and friendly. Even if there is a waiting line outside, it's worth the wait as the place is so big and the service so efficient that you'll get a table quickly. There is also option to get the meat packed for takeaway.
This is the only Bifana I've had and it was everything that I was hoping it would be. I had the bifana with cheese and a vegetable soup. The pork filling is tender and fatty and well-seasoned. We had to line up for a table but we generally missed the peak lunch hour. By the time we left, the line went out the door and round the building. Would definitely have this again.
Delicious bifanas. Simple yet effective. Soft buns, juicy flavorful meat and top notch service. Highly recommend.
