A must do experience in East Java and Kndonesia as a whole Many options to experience it from Surabaya, Malang or Probolinggo Nice walk up the mountain 4WD jeeps to get around etc Some of The horses are in a sad state though - wouldn’t recommend the horse option
Bromo’s magic hits different when you explore it at your own pace—this free & easy trip was the best decision I made in East Java! No rushed schedules, no crowded tour buses—just me, my motorcycle, and the raw beauty of nature unfolding. Flying into Surabaya, I took a budget bus to Probolinggo, then rented a motorbike (130K IDR/day) for the 40km ride up the scenic mountain roads 🏍️. The drive itself was a joy—winding through villages and watching the landscape shift to otherworldly volcanic terrain. Staying in Cemoro Lawang village (super affordable homestays around 200K IDR/night) let me sleep in slightly later than tour groups, then head to Seruni Point at 4 AM for sunrise. Hiking the 30-minute steep trail to the viewpoint was totally worth it—golden light spilling over the crater, sea of clouds swirling below, and the iconic "lunar landscape" stretching as far as the eye could see 🌅. Skipping the pricey jeep tours, I rode my bike to the Sea of Sand and hiked the dusty trail to Bromo’s crater (no need for tickets if you take the local paths!). Standing at the edge, feeling the earth’s rumble and smelling the sharp sulfur, was humbling and awe-inspiring—like staring into the planet’s heart. Later, I wandered the village, sipped hot soto ayam to warm up from the morning chill, and even stumbled upon a quiet sunset spot near Samarinda Hotel with zero crowds. The best part? Flexibility! I stayed longer at King Kong Hill to capture that perfect photo with the网红 tree, skipped the overpriced horse rides, and saved money by grabbing snacks from village shops. Tips for fellow free travelers: Bring a windproof jacket (dawn temps drop to 6-10℃), non-slip shoes (volcanic ash is slippery!), and use Grab for safe rides in cities. Bromo’s freedom is unbeatable—no deadlines, just pure adventure and moments that take your breath away. If you love independent travel, this is the way to experience it. 100% recommend to anyone craving nature’s grandeur on their own terms!
no words, only emotions...We started early from Surabaya, then continued by jeep through the misty Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. The highlight — a breathtaking sunrise above the clouds, followed by a scenic jeep ride and a hike to the crater of Mount Bromo itself.
If you are considering going to Mount Bromo without a jeep tour, definitely bring a motorbike that is above 125 cc. This will help you get across the sea of sand if you choose to ride instead of walk. I rented one in Surabaya and the drive to Bromo and back was horrible. There’s so much traffic and the road is packed. It takes much much longer than Google maps says. So, if you’re opting to rent a scooter, rent one in Probolinggo and the drive will be much shorter and mostly on a beautiful mountain road. I also highly recommend going to the crater first. Most people go to the Sunrise Hill, which may or may not have a good view, depending on the clouds and will definitely be crowded with people and jeeps. Going to the crater first allows you the chance to see the red flames inside. And you will have it all to yourself. Then, you can proceed to Seruni point after sunrise to see the panorama and again have the place all to yourself!
Mt. Bromo is a true natural wonder. Words can’t fully describe its beauty. Standing at the viewpoint, waiting for the sunrise to reveal the landscape, just feels incredible. With Mt. Semeru rising in the background, the view is unforgettable. The best way to get here is to let a tour company arrange everything, driving up the hill in the middle of the night is totally crazy so many slopes and curve. You need to take the jeep go to the view point. Bring some warm cloth, the hill can be quite cold before the sunrise, just for reference it’s around 12’c in Dec. but once you set just enjoy the Splendid view!
