Mendenhall Glacier, located just outside Juneau, is a stunning 13-mile-long river of ice and one of the most accessible glaciers in North America.<br><br>History Summary<br><br>Formed during the Little Ice Age about 3,000 years ago, the glacier was originally known as Sitaantaagu ("Glacier Behind the Town") or Aak'wtaaksit ("Glacier Behind the Little Lake") by the Tlingit people. In 1891, it was renamed in honor of Thomas Corwin Mendenhall, an American physicist and surveyor.
