Tief im Nordwesten von New Mexico liegt die Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wildnis, ein Ort, der sich völlig losgelöst von Zeit und Realität anfühlt. Auf einer Fläche von etwa 70.000 Hektar präsentiert dieses bemerkenswerte Gebiet ein geologisches Spektakel wie kein anderes, das einer von einer verschwundenen Welt geformten Landschaft gleicht. Vor Millionen von Jahren war diese Region unter einem riesigen Binnenmeer versunken, wo sich Schichten aus Schlamm, Kohle und Schlick ansammelten und eine Grundlage für die dramatischen Formationen bildeten, die wir heute sehen.
Als das Meer zurückwich, wurden diese Sedimente angehoben, wodurch ein trockenes Plateau entstand und die erodierten Überreste eines längst verlorenen Sumpfes freigelegt wurden. Aus der Ferne erscheint die Landschaft als niedrige, grau-braune Hügel. Doch ein Ausflug in die Wildnis offenbart ein komplexes Netzwerk aus zerklüftetem Boden, tiefen Einschnitten, schmalen Graten und filigranen Steinkappen, die so weit das Auge reicht. Das trockene Klima und die dünnen, salzigen Böden haben das Wachstum von nennenswerter Vegetation verhindert, wodurch eine Umgebung dominiert wird von nacktem Fels, offenem Himmel und dem ständigen Flüstern des Windes.
Besucher beschreiben das Erlebnis oft als jenseitig, eine wahrhaft einzigartige Begegnung mit einer surrealen Ecke des amerikanischen Südwestens. Obwohl der Zugang schwierig sein kann – der Boden kann besonders in den Wintermonaten außergewöhnlich rutschig sein – sind die Belohnungen immens. Es wird empfohlen, eine Wanderroute im Voraus herunterzuladen, da die Signalabdeckung begrenzt ist und man sich leicht verirren kann. Abstract rock formations! On 28th December 2025, we went on a self-guided tour of this wilderness area to see the fantasy world of unusual rock formations with our friends. This was the first time we hiked in any wilderness area and we were completely blown away. We combined the Bisti Badlands and Bisti Washloop trails together, hiked 6.54-miles and spent around five hours exploring this place. This hike was easy to us; there were a few easy climbs (which can be avoided). The unique, dark-colored (often stained by iron oxides to a rich brown) ‘Chocolate Hoodoos’ are found in this eroded landscape. Other otherworldly formations, in the area include Alien Hatchery/Cracked fossilized eggs and mushroom-like pillars sculpted from sedimentary rock by wind and water, alongside numerous petrified wood logs. It was amazing to observe how intense weathering by wind and infrequent, heavy rains carves soft shale, sandstone, and mudstone into intricate formations and arrangements. Suggestions: 1) Check weather conditions before hiking in this badland area. 2) To reach to the trailhead requires a high-clearance vehicle for the rough, primitive dirt road. 3) As there are no trail markers please download an offline map. 4) Please wear heat protection and put on sturdy hiking shoes with good traction. 5) Bring enough water and high energy snack with you. 6) Avoid touching the intricate formations. 7) Leave no trace behind.
Amazing place to visit. I highly recommend going in winter, early spring, or late fall—avoid the hot summer months. A few things to note: • The bathrooms were poorly maintained and had a strong odor. • There are no clearly marked trails, and it’s easy to get lost, so bring a compass or use a GPS/backtracking app. • County Road 7500 is an unpaved dirt road (about 20 miles) and can be rough. • As an alternative, NM 371 is generally a better route to access the area.

Beautiful, stark, otherworldly landscape. Be sure to download a hiking route as there is no signal and one could easily get lost.
Conditions were harsh on 1 December with lower temps but the place is strangely enigmatic. Hike party of 4. Don’t come for the markers it is underwhelming. Come instead to experience a surreal corner of the world. The howling winds, sun, frost etc is an unforgettable experience. Come well covered for desert extremes and a downloaded map. Use the blinking tower and lines as a marker. Toilets available by the parking lot.
Winter here is quiet and almost deserted. The ground is extremely slippery, making higher areas nearly impossible to climb. It looks dry on the surface, but the mud sticks heavily to your shoes. Despite the tricky conditions, the landscape is incredibly unique—strange rock formations, otherworldly shapes, and a quiet wilderness vibe. I find it even more interesting and fun than the typical badlands，even bad. If you don’t mind the mud and slippery paths, this place rewards you with views you won’t find anywhere else. A truly unforgettable, raw, and wild winter adventure.
