The Roman Bridge of Alcântara: A Gem of Ancient Engineering

The Roman Bridge of Alcântara, located in Alcântara (Cáceres), Spain, is an impressive testament to the ingenuity and skill of the ancient Romans. Built by order of Emperor Trajan and designed by the architect Gaius Julius Lacer, this bridge crosses the Tagus River and has withstood the test of time since approximately the year 106 AD. At the center of the bridge stands the Trajan memorial, a triumphal arch 10 meters high. At the foot of the bridge lies a small Roman temple, initially dedicated to the engineer Lacer and later Christianized as Saint Julian. An inscription in the center of the bridge honors Emperor Trajan, born in Hispania. Interestingly, the construction was funded by taxes from seven Lusitanian towns and aimed to connect the road from Norba to Conímbriga. The name "Alcântara" derives from the Arabic "al-Qantarat," meaning "The bridge."

It was partially destroyed in 1213 by the Muslims, and later, in 1475, it was preserved by King Afonso V of Portugal.
